Unique Easter Celebration: Egg Drop Event Brings Community Together

An innovative twist on a traditional holiday activity brought families in East Moline together, thanks to the collaboration between the local library and fire department. The event reimagined the classic Easter egg hunt by introducing an engineering challenge that combined creativity with scientific thinking. On April 19, participants gathered outside the East Moline Public Library to witness children testing their problem-solving skills through a fun and educational experience.

The highlight of the event was the construction and deployment of protective devices designed to safeguard eggs as they were dropped from significant heights. Fire trucks provided by the East Moline Fire Department served as elevated platforms for this experiment, adding excitement and realism to the occasion. Children showcased remarkable ingenuity in crafting their contraptions, employing materials like cotton balls, marshmallows, or even parachutes to ensure safe landings. According to Abby Sauer, an adult-service coordinator at the library, the goal was to provide a science-based activity that everyone could enjoy regardless of personal beliefs. The initiative proved successful, leaving library staff enthusiastic about repeating it next year. Despite some broken eggs, many survived unscathed, ready for painting—an outcome reflecting both the joy of discovery and the power of perseverance.
